Australia Awards in Indonesia is seeking applications for the Building Modern Cities Short
Course. This course will provide participants with important knowledge and principles required todesign and run a city that is smart, environmentally sustainable, efficient in resource use, and functions optimally for the benefit of residents to uphold a high standard of living to create a city that people want to live in.
The course includes a 2-week course in Australia and two workshops in Indonesia. The course is offered to 25 participants and is targeted to those directly involved in the design, construction, or maintenance of Indonesia’s new capital city, Nusantara. This may include government officials, state-owned enterprises, or the academia.
Learning objectives
The course will focus on the following learning objectives (the course will help participants):
•Identify what is required from a modern city that will make people want to live there
(incorporating, in the case of Nusantara; reasons for the move of the capital;
engagement with local Kalimantan communities; developing a people focussed and
inclusive city).
• Explore most suitable institutional arrangements (design, development, and
coordination of institutional arrangements in different sectors, including water, energy,
transportation, data and information management).
• Enhance their skills to contribute to the design, construction or maintenance of the new
capital, Nusantara, including connecting the three areas of Nusantara (Western part,
Central part and Eastern part – existing city).
• Explore Australian smart city policies, plans, expertise, and initiatives, including water-
sensitive cities, urban green spaces, nature-based solutions for sustainable planning,
and accelerating housing development utilising the latest technologies.
• Benchmark and share experiences and best practices on policies and initiatives
enhancing the sustainability and resilience of cities (including areas such as
environmental sustainability, climate change, energy usage, intelligent transport
systems, water management and food security) in the region and globally.
• Compare data collection (including water supply and electricity) and resource
management approaches to support smart cities and infrastructure.
• Map stakeholders (including their roles and responsibilities) that influence smart city
design, construction and maintenance (including impacted communities) – develop
stakeholder engagement/management plans.
• Analyse risks and challenges in smart city design, construction and maintenance and
develop mitigation strategies, including mitigating risks of deforestation, bushfire and
wildlife management strategies, and building on land previously used for mining.
•Identify ways Australia and Indonesia (including the private sector) can continue to
work together to advance smart cities.
• Build networks with Australian institutions and experts for partnerships and strengthen
networks between participating agencies, including research and private sector
collaboration between the two countries.

• Pre-course workshop in Indonesia on 30 January – 1 February 2024 (TBC)
• Short course over two weeks in Australia on 26 February – 8 March 2024 (TBC)
• Post-course workshop in Indonesia on 4 – 6 June 2024 (TBC)

To apply for this course, you must be:
• Government of Indonesia representatives directly involved in the design, construction, or maintenance of Indonesia’s new capital city, Nusantara, including government officials,
state-owned enterprises, and academia with longer-term involvement in IKN.
• Staff with relevant experience and enduring association with Nusantara
• Academia with connection to Nusantara
• Minimum S1 level qualification or higher
• Endorsed by current manager/supervisor
• Committed to preparing and implementing an Award Project, a small group development project, as part of the course.

Applicants are expected to have professional working proficiency in English. The applicants’ English language competency is part of the selection process. Applicants can submit any additional evidence as part of their application (proof of studies or living in an English-speaking country, working in an English-speaking environment, completion of studies in English, language courses or language tests). The course will be delivered in English. This is a fully funded short course. Course fees, mobilisation costs, return airfares (domestic and international), insurance in Australia (OSHC), accommodation (in Indonesia and Australia), per diem, transport allowance and visa will be covered by Australia Awards in Indonesia.
